I struggled with the purchase of an ATV for several months, did the research, talked to people, price shoppped, test drove new and used and finally decided on a used Artic Cat 500 Auto. Our family requirements were as follows: ease of use for my wife, sons, father, cousins etc: (had to be automatic and easy to steer) Good load carrying and towing capacity (fire wood, moose etc) comfortable ride (lots of logging roads here, some new, some dating back over 80 years) Good in mud and hill climbing.
Generally I find the Cat has not disappointed us and everybody is enjoying it. The ride with 2-up at 30 to 35 mph on logging roads is stable and comfortable but high speed cornering suffers slightly with loading. If I ride alone, the bike responds well given its size and weight and drives effortlessly. (It is designed for 1 person).
Lots of pulling power and hill climbing capability in 4 low and seems to perform well in deep soft mud. I prefer the manual levers for shifting HI/LO and 2/4. Travelling by ATV in Newfoundland can get very lonely and the weather is unpredictable. You can go through 4 seasons in 24 hours. I like to have mechanical levers and things I can beat with a rock or stick if I get in trouble a long way from home. The 500cc engine provides enough power for my use, but I would like better mid-range power in 2 wheel/HI for long inclines over the logging roads in the mountains. The engine seems a bit choked off for a 500 single (exhaust?? any ideas??) The engine braking in low range is excellent, but the rear mechanical brake and gas gauge have got to go.
After not being used for a couple of days it has to be cranked a few times to start, after that it starts great. Seating position is just right for my body size and it is an enjoyable machine.
Upgrades/Accessories: Rear pegs,
Warn winch,
Titan AT589 Mud/Snow tires,
Two bungee cords, one peice of heavy duty plastic and a very long rope.
Shopping for better intake and exhaust.
